Body Biomechanics
Before we get into tips, we first have to understand what body biomechanics means. Simply put, it means the science of movement of a living body. That includes how muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments work together to produce movement. For our bodies to function properly, we need to have good body alignment aka optimal placement of our body parts so that bones are efficiently used and so muscles have to do less work to achieve the same effect. Make sense?
So how do we do this?
Keeping your back in a neutral position.
Using proper lifting techniques -- you’ve heard people say, lift with your legs and not with your back!
When walking or standing, keeping your ear, shoulder, hip, and ankle in a line. Stand shoulder width apart.
Push shoulders back and down, keep your chin level by pretending it's resting on the back end of a shelf.
Listen to your body - you should never feel strain or discomfort. Your body will tell you when something doesn’t feel right.
Maintain some level of fitness to keep your strength up!
When it comes to evaluating my patients, these are all factors I take into consideration. They tell me which muscles are being overused, which are weak or tight and contribute to the way I develop treatment plans!
