Piriformis: A Real Pain in the Butt
Located in the glute region, the piriformis is a muscle that assists in rotating the hip and turning the leg and foot outward. Because the sciatic nerve runs directly beneath it (in some people the nerve runs through the muscle), trigger points here can be responsible for a type of sciatica known as Piriformis Syndrome. When the trigger point is active, it can refer pain over the glute and the back of the thigh (hamstring area).
Patients usually report:
🔸pain or discomfort in the glute region
🔸low back pain
🔸numbness or tingling down the leg
🔸pain worse with sitting (maybe you’re squirming around a lot) or with activity
