TMJD: A Real Pain in the Jaw
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) is a painful condition that affects the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. (Note: when referring to the anatomy/the joint itself, it’s simply TMJ. When referring to the dysfunction, it’s TMJD). It can cause discomfort in the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders, cause headaches, and may be accompanied by popping or clicking sounds when moving the jaw. While many people turn to dentists or oral surgeons for treatment, chiropractic care is also a viable option for those suffering from TMJD.
When it comes to TMJD, as chiropractors we can use a variety of techniques to address the root causes of the condition. For example, we can perform adjustments to the jaw joint to improve its alignment and reduce tension in the surrounding muscles. We may also use soft tissue techniques such as Graston or trigger point therapy to release tight muscles surrounding the joint to help ease pain symptoms.
Chiropractic care for TMJD is often part of a larger treatment plan that includes lifestyle changes, such as avoiding hard or chewy foods, practicing stress management techniques, and improving posture. By addressing these underlying issues, chiropractors can help patients manage their symptoms and prevent TMD from recurring.
