Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Thoracic Oulet Syndrome, also known simply as TOS, occurs when blood vessels or nerves are compressed in an area between your collarbone and first rib. Symptoms vary depending on which structures are compressed.

If nerves are compressed then we may see muscle atrophy in the fleshy base of your thumb, numbness or tingling in your arm or fingers, neck/shoulder/arm pain, and/or weakened grip.

If blood vessels are involved, then we may see discoloration of your hand, arm pain and swelling, weak or no pulse in the affected arm, cold hands, numbness or tingling in your fingers, or weakness of the arm.

So what causes Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
Poor posture, trauma to the area such as a MVA, repetitive activity, pressure on the area from a purse or backpack, pregnancy due to ligament laxity, or anything that may have caused a change in the biomechanics of the neck/shoulder/upper back. Stretching is the key to prevention!

Progressive nerve damage may occur if left untreated, so if you’re experiencing these symptoms please go see a doctor to get evaluated!
