Simply Splenius!

Located at the back of the neck and upper back, the splenius capitis is a thin, broad muscle that runs from the base of the skull to the upper thoracic vertebrae. It is part of the group of muscles known as the erector spinae, which help to extend and rotate the spine, and provide stability for keeping your head upright.

When the splenius capitis muscle becomes tight or when trigger points here become active, it can cause a range of symptoms both locally and in other parts of the body. This includes producing headaches, neck pain, and stiffness. In some cases, this muscle can also contribute to pain and discomfort in the shoulders and upper back.

So what causes these trigger points? Poor posture, repetitive strain, or direct injury are a few reasons to blame.

As a chiropractor, it’s important to be able to identify and treat issues with the splenius capitis muscle. Treatment may involve a combination of manual therapies such as adjustments, stretching, and trigger point therapy, as well as exercises and other interventions to help improve posture and reduce tension in the neck and upper back.
