Snap, Crackle, Pop: What is an adjustment?
The word Chiropractic comes from the Greek words cheir (hands) and praxis (practice) -- It literally means hands-on therapy!
An adjustment is when a high velocity-low amplitude force (pressure) is applied to a person’s spine or other part of their body, such as the elbow or wrist.
Accompanying the adjustment there is an audible release of gas that is caused when small cavities of partial vacuum form in the synovial fluid and then rapidly collapse, producing a sharp sound. Oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide are released in the joint.
By introducing this force in the joint, the goal is to reduce pain and improve range of motion.
